Some oil drilling in Venezuela slowed by protests

CARACAS, Venezuela

The oil drills of four companies in Venezuela have been partially paralyzed by workers demanding pay raises, but the government says the protests haven't affected oil production.

Jorge Esteves, labor manager for state-run Petroleos de Venezuela SA, says the contractors' drilling operations have been halted four or five hours a day since last week in eastern Monagas state due to the protest.

Esteves' statement Tuesday says the companies affected are China National Petroleum Co., Petrex, Schlumberger Ltd. and Precision Drilling Trust.

He calls the protests unjustified. He says the work stoppages have caused unspecified losses for the state oil company, but adds that oil production in eastern Venezuela has been unaffected.
