Barkindo, NNPC GMD Sacked

Tony Ailemen

Abuja — Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Alhaji Mohammed Sanusi Barkindo, was yesterday sacked by Acting President Goodluck Jonathan. He was replaced by Alhaji Shehu Ladan.

The decision came on the heels of the reconstitution of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) aimed at giving NNPC a new lease of life.

It will be recalled that the NNPC had been under pressure from stakeholders especially governors who have been fighting to stop the leakages in the finances of the corporation which they say had reduced the states' share of the Federation Account.

Only recently, the National Assembly threatened to invoke its powers against Barkindo for allegedly refusing to honor their invitation to answer some questions on the expenditure profile of the NNPC.

Ladan who hails from Kaduna State retired from NNPC on April 6, 2009, as Group Executive Director (GED), Commercial and Investment. He was also former Deputy Managing Director of Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG).

He is expected to execute the administration's vision of transforming the NNPC into a global brand and player.

Jonathan thanked Barkindo for his stewardship and wished him well in his future endeavours.
