Venezuela's oil exports decreased by 6.8 percent year on year in April, averaging 2.36 million barrels per day (bpd), said on Tuesday the Ministry of Energy, according to figures audited by an independent firm.

Venezuelan oil exports, particularly those of oil byproducts, have been on the decline ever since 2009, in the midst of planned and fortuitous shutdowns in the refining circuit of state-run PetrĂ³leos de Venezuela (Pdvsa) and increased domestic demand for fuels.

Exports of upgraded crude oil reverted a rebound recorded in March and tumbled again in April, averaging 396,332 bpd, well below the refining capacity of the four oil upgrading plants based in the Orinoco Belt, of 620,000 bpd.

Venezuela exported 422,280 bpd of oil derivatives in April, 1.4 percent more than the same month of 2009, but imported 105,623 bpd of different products, slightly above imports in the previous year, Reuters reported.
